NEW GLASGOW – The Pictou County Gymnastics Club is preparing for its fifth annual Fun Meet.
The weekend fun will begin at 5:30 p.m. June 10 and run until 8 p.m. Events on June 11 run all day, from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the gymnastics club, 558 South Frederick Street (old YMCA location).
With the new location, the club is able to accommodate larger groups and to coach more athletes. The Fun Meet is the group’s largest fundraiser of the year.
The Pictou County Gymnastics Club is a not-for-profit organization providing a variety of gymnastics classes and programs for children ranging in age from toddlers to teens. It offers pre-school, recreational programs for school-age children, training for Special Olympics, classes for advanced skills and competitive training and support. Club members are proud to say they’ve had a number of their athletes qualify and compete with Team Nova Scotia.
In order to continue providing programs for more than 400 children from Pictou County and beyond, the club must do fundraising and seek support of members of the community. One of the ways they do this is through events like the Annual Fun Meet. This event is their main fundraiser, as well as an opportunity for the athletes to show off their skills in front of their families and the general public, earning ribbons and medals in the process.
During this two-day event, funds are raised by selling 50/50 tickets, having the Lottery Tree raffle, selling barbecued food and canteen refreshments.
