While the Relay for Life is strictly a non-competitive event, a young team from Pictou can take pride in being the top fundraising team, not only for Pictou County but quite possibly the province as a whole.

Jeana’s Girls raised $15,800.

The team, made of girls from the Dr. Thomas McCulloch School in Pictou, was headed up by Nina Davey, 13, of Pictou and honoured Davey’s friend and schoolmate Jeana English who passed away eight months ago from brain cancer.

Davey said the Relay for Life was the perfect way to celebrate her best friend’s memory as Jeana had a competitive spirit and it was the type of event she was likely to take part in herself.

Davey said it “felt great” to be the top fundraising team.

Jeana’s Girls raised money through a bake sale, yard sale, and a barbecue as well as through personal donations. Davey raised more than $2,000 of the team’s total herself, while teammate Georgia Murray led Jeana’s Girls with $3,975 raised.

Davey said that in addition to Jeana, she was also taking part in the Relay for Life in honour of her father, Robert, who is a cancer survivor.
