The ship has close to 200 passengers from numerous areas across the United States and the cruise line Pearl Seas has Pictou as one of its regular ports of call due to the interest in the many heritage and historical features of the region.
Michelle Young, co-chair of the Pictou County Cruise Committee, explains that the passengers will be offered an historic walking tour of Pictou by local guides as well as a greeting by New Glasgow Town Crier Jim Stewart.
“Passengers love to see historical costumes or uniforms that reflect local history as well as hearing about the heritage and historical background of the region,” Young says.
The local Cruise Committee is also grateful for the generosity of the Customs House Inn as the location for a welcome centre for the cruise ship passengers.
“In addition to the hospitality extended, passengers are keen to see heritage architecture such as that of the Customs House Inn. It is such an interesting building,” adds Young.
She also explained that the committee is working on expanding its on-shore excursion offerings and is hoping to have the tour operator that works with the cruise ships help them promote these products. It is believed that there is opportunity to have more heritage tours as well as art and local food related tours. The committee is continuing its work to attract additional ships to the local port and Pictou County region.
