Major Midgets host Tradesmen

The Pictou County Weeks Major Midgets will try to continue their recent success in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League when they visit the South Shore Mustangs on Saturday and host the Cape Breton Tradesmen on Sunday.

The Major Midgets’ home game at the Pictou County Wellness Centre will start at noon and will be their last home game before Christmas.

Pictou County continues to occupy fourth place in the league standings after securing three of a possible four points in two home games last weekend by edging the Halifax McDonalds 4-3 in overtime before losing a 4-3 shootout against the Cole Harbour Pro Hockey Life Wolfpack.

Jaden Mason collected two goals and one assist, while Kevin Mason added a goal and an assist for Pictou County. But it was Gavin Hart’s goal with 29 seconds left in overtime that won the game against Halifax, who had a 34-32 edge in shots on goal.

The teams were tied 1-1 through one period and tied 3-3 entering the third period.
It was another close game on Sunday as Pictou County took in each period of regulation before Cole Harbour scored two goals to Pictou County’s one goal to win the shootout.

Jaden Mason scored the only goal for Pictou County in the first period, while Gerald Blackmore gave Pictou County a 2-1 lead in the second period and Bryce Reynolds restored the lead in the third period.

Blackmore, the Major Midgets’ leading scorer, took a misconduct penalty near the end of overtime that prevented him from taking part in the shootout.

The Wolfpack outshot Pictou County 35-34.

Pictou County’s game with the Wolfpack on Sunday was the teams’ third meeting in a week.

The Major Midgets followed a 3-1 victory over the Wolfpack on Nov. 26 with a 6-5 regulation loss last Wednesday in Cole Harbour.

The Wolfpack led 3-0 through one period, but Pictou County outscored them 4-1 in the second period on Lanceleve’s two goals and one each by Gavin Hart and Kevin Mason.
Reynolds’ goal in the third period tied the game at 5-5 before Cole Harbour notched the winning goal.

Pictou County has three of the top four point-getters. Blackmore leads with 13 goals and 23 assists for 36 points, while Lanceleve and Mason are tied for third with 33 points each.
After this weekend, Pictou County will visit the Steele Subaru Major Midgets on Dec. 17 in Dartmouth and Halifax on Dec. 18, as well as the first-place Cape Breton West Islanders on Dec. 28.

Pictou County will host the Tradesmen for another game on Dec. 30.
