NEW GLASGOW — Teams are getting ready for the seventh annual Jean MacLeod Proudfoot Broomball Challenge being played on Saturday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
The Westside and North End rosters will converge on the ice for an hour-long presentation starting at 7 p.m.
Westside won the first five tournaments before the North End recorded a win last year.
The challenge represents the longest single fundraiser for both the Westside and North End recreation centres in New Glasgow.
Organizer Frank Proudfoot noted that the event has raised more than $110,000 for playground equipment and kitchen renovations and it has attracted more than 75 different participants during the six years.
The challenge was developed in 2010 to honour a lifetime of volunteer work at the Westside centre in memory of Jean Proudfoot.
It has been 80 years this year since a school mate fell through the ice while skating on the East River in 1937 and Jean’s father, James D. MacLeod, formed a committee to construct a playground and outdoor rink on the west side of New Glasgow so that all residents of the town would have a safe, family-friendly area to skate and socialize.
Westside players confirmed include Emma Harlow, Kelsey MacIntosh, Nicolle Smith, Ashley Lecreux, Andrea Pentz, Jacki Breen, Peter Walsh, Jason Patriquin, Michael Mullins, Jeremy Walker, Ian Brushett, Ben Chapmen, Rodney Hynes, Andrew MacLellan, Rob Mason, Bruce Wheadon, Connor MacNeil, Sean Munro, Craig Murray and Dick Fraser.
The North End team will have John Kennedy backing up Stephen Grant in goal. Defence pairings include Jennifer Wadden and Debbie Clark, Angela Ellsworth and Amy MacInnis and Tena Cooke and Chris Kirkendall.
Four forward lines include Mark Arbuckle with Chris Baldwin and Trevor Boudreau, Brandon MacInnis with Joey MacGillivray and Adam O’Neill, Sami Jaro and Brent MacEachern and Andy MacKay and Chase Kirkendall with Richard Cooke and Lloyd MacInnis/Evan Cameron.
Coaches are Clyde Fraser and Jack Lewis, while Andrew Alcorn is the manager.
