NEW GLASGOW — The North Cabot Blazers edged the host Pictou County Lightning 59-58 last weekend in the championship game of the eight-team, Under-16 girls’ minor basketball tournament the Lightning hosted at New Glasgow Academy.
The Lightning and six other teams from Nova Scotia were joined by one team from Sackville, N.B.
Play was intense with 10 of the 16 games being decided by seven points or less.
Pictou County started by defeating the Dartmouth Lakers 49-43 in the first game on Friday. Lead scorers for Lightning were Raegan MacDonald with 11 points, while Cailey Russell and Kassi Brightman added seven each.
Karielle Floyd netted 20 points and Madelyn MacMillan added 12 as the Lightning pulled away from a close game and defeated Sackville 62-45.
Floyd collected 24 points and MacMillan added seven as the Lightning completed their round-robin schedule by defeating Shelburne 59-57.
The Lightning advanced to the championship game with a 36-33 victory over the Halifax Hurricanes in their cross-over match. Floyd had nine points MacMillan added seven.
The Blazers prevailed in a see-saw battle to win the championship.
Floyd collected 17 points for the Lightning, while MacDonald and Danielle Crosby added eight each and Kassi Brightman pitched in with seven.
