The Northern Subway Selects opened their 2017-18 midget female hockey season at home last weekend against the Fundy Nationals from Saint John, N.B.
The Selects, who are the defending Midget AAA provincial champions, return with a strong team in the Nova Scotia Female Midget Hockey League in hopes of a repeat.
The Selects have added three new players to their roster from last year, including the sister act out of Antigonish, Ella and Kara MacLean, and Cassie Clarke of Pictou.
The three join a strong core of veteran third-year players led by Camryn Halliday, Maddie Quinn and Sophia Wornell. Returning third-year players in their second year with the Selects include Jensen Arsenault, Taylor MacKenzie and Heath Miller.
Sophmores, KJ Emery, Ashley Livingston, Mariah Linehan, Jenna Reid, Lindsey Smith and Eva Wornell round out the skaters.
The team is backstopped by the all-star netminding duo of Lily Currie and Jenna Landry who are both in the second season with the Selects but will graduate this year.
“Expectations are high for us as we have so many returning players to our line-up,” says coach Troy Reid. “Our new additions should solidify our offence and defensive structure as well. We know it won’t be easy with the quality teams in the league and the fact we now have three very good teams from N.B. joining us.”
“We’re very excited to get going after such a high from last year’s provincial win and then coming so close at Atlantics,” said assistant coach Steve Halliday. “Our group is focused and we’re ready to go.”
Kara MacLean led the offence with five points on three goals and two assists on Saturday as the Selects defeated the Nationals 11-0.
Emery, Linehan and Smith each scored twice and singles went to Halliday and Clarke. Landry got the shut out.
The Selects travel to Moncton next weekend where they will take on the Rockets in a weekend series.
