The memory of a Stellarton woman was honoured Saturday.
The late Catherine Campbell, a 10-year veteran of the Stellarton Fire Department and a decorated member of the Truro Police Service, was remembered and permanently etched into the city-scape of the town she loved, with the Town of Stellarton formally dedicating one of the benches in Town Square to her memory.
The event was well attended by Campbell’s peers from the Stellarton Fire Department, Truro Police, as well as family and friends.
Firefighter Terry McChesney spoke on behalf of the SFD and recalled the news of Campbell’s death as “a devastating blow to all of us, as we are a family.”
“It truly felt as if part of us died, too,” McChesney said. “It was one of the hardest moments and still is to this day that I have ever went through. But to see the friends, coworkers and community pull together in Catherine’s name is truly beautiful.”
McChesney said Campbell is often in her thoughts, and found it fitting that the memorial should be so close to a place so special to Campbell.
“Now we have a place close to ‘home’ to sit with her and remember.”
Campbell’s aunt, Amanda Wong, spoke on behalf of her family, and noted how “humbled and amazed” Campbell would be by the love the town has shown her and her family in the years since her passing.
“She was very proud to be from Stellarton,” Wong said. “If she met anyone who didn’t know where Stellarton was, she told them all about it in that fun, charismatic way she had.”
“Catherine gave so much of herself to her hometown,” Wong added. “To have this bench dedicated to her memory, right here by so many of the places she loved — the fire hall, the police station, the great Pictou County pizza shops, and the rink where she never missed Homecoming, is so very meaningful… and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
Campbell was murdered more than two years ago in Halifax.
The memory of former Stellarton firefighter and Truro Police officer Catherine Campbell was honoured Saturday with the dedication of a bench in the town’s newly constructed Town Square.
