To the Editor:
An oil company called Lone Pine is suing Canada for millions under toxic ISDS provisions in NAFTA because Quebec put a temporary ban on fracking. Nova Scotia also has a ban on fracking. Will we be sued next?
NAFTA places corporations above governments. Chapter 11 of NAFTA gives billionaire corporations special rights to sue governments in shadowy international tribunals for passing laws or policies that might reduce their expected profits. As a sovereign nation, we should have the right to protect our people, the land and the water, without lawsuits.
This undermines our democracy!
With the renegotiation on NAFTA, I sincerely hope Chapter 11 is thrown out and we can determine our own future again.
It’s time to toss ISDS in the trash bin of history.
