PICTOU — It was a big weekend in more ways than one for Leigha MacDonald.
MacDonald backstopped the Pictou County Subway Selects to the Midget AA Division title during the 2017 Subway Cup female hockey tournament that ended on Sunday. It was one of several division wins for Pictou County female hockey teams at the tournament.
MacDonald scored the only goal in overtime as the host Pictou Academy Pitbulls outlasted their visitors from Cape Breton by a 1-0 score to advance to the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation’s Division III female championship that is being played this week in Lockeport.
The Selects lost one of their Midget AA games, ending with a win on Sunday. They started on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Cape Breton West and a 3-0 victory over Metro East. They edged Colchester 2-1 and lost 5-1 to Metro West on Saturday.
The Northern Subway Selects diffused the Moncton Rockets 6-0 in the Midget AAA Division final on Sunday.
The Selects were unbeaten as they downed the East Hants Penguins 5-2 and whipped the Central Storm 8-3 on Friday and defeated Metro Boston Pizza 4-2 and blanked the Northern Lightning 4-0 on Saturday. They advanced against Moncton after a 5-2 semi-final win over the Lightning.
The Selects also advanced to the Bantam Division final with a 3-2 win over the Phantoms. They edged Moncton 3-2 and Metro East 3-2 before blanking Western P.E.I. 5-0.
Baillie Griffon and Kenzie Greencorn scored as the Peewee Selects won their division with a 2-0 win over MV Blue.
The Selects shut out Central Storm 3-0, defeated MV Blue 4-1 and topped Metro West Red 4-2before edging Western Wind 3-2 in their semifinal.
The Atom AA Selects played four games and did not reach the division final.
Hailey Taylor and Reese Murray scored in their 2-2 tie with Metro West Force White. Ada White has two assists and Avery Henderson had one.
Brooke Green, Karlee Rose and Acelyn Potter scored in the Selects’ 5-3 setback against Central Storm. Ella Fitt, Henderson and Sidney Keay drew assists.
Murray assisted on a goal by Rose in the Selects’ 2-1 loss to MWF White.
The Selects played to a scoreless tie in their other game against the Storm.
Kenli Ross played all four games in goal for the Selects.
All the division finals and semifinals and most of the preliminary games were played at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
