Fraser Kennedy and Cathy Kennedy are back organizing a Christmas dinner at the New Horizons facility in downtown Pictou.
Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Day.
“This is our sixth year,” Cathy Kennedy said. “It’s hard to believe. We don’t have anyone at home and we thought it can be a lonely time for people. We thought of people who might not have Christmas dinner or be alone, so we thought we’d give it a try.”
The dinner had a modest beginning but has begun to catch on for more people, she said.
“The first year, not that many people came,” she said. “Last year, we had more than 80 people.”
The breakdown included 40 people who came in for the meal, 20 volunteers who sat down for a meal and 20 meals that were delivered.
The volunteers make it possible, she said.
“This dinner could not go on without all of the volunteers who give of their time and energy to help,” she said.
“We also have many people who donate food items such as turkeys, turnip, squash, potatoes, carrots and cranberries. We also get monetary donations as well. It is so wonderful to see how people work together so that others who may not have a Christmas dinner or may be alone can come and enjoy.”
