TRURO – The Pictou County Peewee AA Crushers have won their hockey division at the 2017 KFC – Mike Schmitt Tournament of Champions last week in Truro.
Landon Steele’s three goals and two goals and two assists by Zach MacInnis led the Crushers’ 6-1 triumph against the Acadia Axemen in the championship game. John K. Martin also scored.
Brennen Hood recorded three assists, while Kayden Moulasion and Colby Nichol had one each.
The Crushers opened the tournament last Friday with a 4-2 loss to the Yarmouth Mariners, who were seeking revenge after an earlier sweep of two games by the Crushers. Steele and Wyatt Spence scored the Crushers’ goals. Brennen Hood added an assist.
Nichol scored twice and Jacob MacLeod recorded a shutout as the Crushers recovered with a 4-0 win over the Axemen. MacInnis and Spence also scored. Martin had two assists and Moulasion, Steele and Blake MacLennan added one apiece.
On Saturday the Crushers were back in action in Brookfield facing a familiar foe, the West Hants Warriors. The Crushers topped the Warriors 4-2 on goals by Moulasion, Levon Walst, Clint MacLaughlin and Ben Marchand. Nichol collected two assists, while Spence and Martin added singles. With the win the Crushers finished first out of six teams in the round robin with a record of 2-1 and got a bye to the championship game.
Assists came off the sticks of Hood with 3, MacInnis with 2, and singles from Moulasion and Nichol. Landon Steele was player of the game.
With the wins the Crushers have improved to 22-4-2 for the season.
They next see action when they resume Mainland League play against the host Truro Bearcats on Saturday at the Rath Eastlink Centre.
