It was a gratifying weekend for the Pictou County Subways Selects’ Bantam team at the 2018 Subway Cup.
Hayley Burke scored in the second period as the Selects won their division with a 1-0 victory over the Antigonish Bulldogs in the championship game to complete the female hockey tournament on Sunday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
Kelly Harnett collected the shutout for the Selects, who outscored their opposition 9-1 and posted two other shutouts in the preliminary round.
“I thought they worked hard every game,” coach Dave MacIntyre said. “The girls were buying into what we were trying to tell them and it worked out this weekend. The goalies on every team are good, although we did have some good scoring chances, but we knew we had to play well defensively.”
The Selects entered Sunday’s game undefeated after opening with a 2-1 victory over Metro West White and a 1-0 win over Metro West Red on Friday. They blanked Metro West Blue 2-0 and shut out Pownal, P.E.I. 3-0 on Saturday.
None of the other three Pictou County teams advanced to the playoffs on Sunday.
Both the Atom and Peewee Division teams went 2-2 in the preliminary round, while the Midget Division team posted one win, one loss and one tie.
The Midget Selects tied Metro West White 2-2, edged Pownal 2-1 and lost 6-1 to Glace Bay.
The Peewee Selects defeated Metro West Blue 3-1, lost 1-0 to Antigonish twice and lost 3-1 to Metro West Blue in their double round robin.
The Atom Selects recovered from a 5-0 loss to Colchester to edge Pownal 5-4 but lost 5-0 to Antigonish before shutting out North River 2-0.
