Pictou County hockey players have been playing hockey this season while pursuing studies at Holland College.

First-year forward Katelyn Dunn of New Glasgow was recently named the college’s female athlete of the week ending on February 4 while playing with the Holland Hurricanes.

Goalie Kara Mason and team captain Annika Mason of Stellarton and Hayley Foote are also on the team.

They play against fellow Pictou County players on a team at Acadia University: Maddie Bourque of Westville and Jordan Archibald from Thorburn.

Kaila Reid plays with the UNB Red Blazers.

The three teams comprise the East Coast Women’s Hockey League. All are former members of the Subway Selects hockey program.

Dunn said she appreciates the opportunity to play hockey at this level with teammates she has previously played with back home.

“I have to thank my parents and coaches for always believing in me and cheering me on,” she said. “My teammates are incredible, without them I wouldn’t be able to be the player that I am. There’s no ‘i’ in team and my teammates are a perfect example of that; we work together and use each other’s strengths to succeed on the ice. It’s really fun to be able to play with other girls from Pictou County that I grew up playing with.”

Dunn helped the ‘Canes to an undefeated weekend on the road versus UNB in Fredericton, NB. She was hailed for playing a solid two-way game in a 3-0 victory on February 3 and scored twice in the ‘Canes’ 4-1 triumph on February 4.

The wins gave the ‘Canes a 10-4 record.

Dunn entered last week’s league action second in goals with seven and third in points with nine.

“It’s very rewarding to know that my hard work on and off the ice has paid off. ,” she said.

Hurricanes have just two regular-season games remaining this season when they take on the Acadia Axewomen on March 2 and 3 in Wolfville, NS.

The Hurricanes will host the 2018 Atlantic Collegiate Women’s Hockey Championship from March 23 to 25 at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague.

Dunn is studying in the Pastry Arts program.
