Members of the Mariposa East Figure Skating Club earned their share of medals during the 2018 Skate Canada Nova Scotia STARSkate and synchronized competition at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

More than 250 skaters took part in the event that took place on Saturday and Sunday on both ice surfaces.

“This competition was a tremendous success, obviously hugely due to our Mariposa committee and members, donating countless hours and abilities,” said Angela Coady Pennington, the club’s head coach. “The support of the towns, county and local businesses were overwhelming. The pride the skaters felt while watching the competitors step into our Wellness Centre was amazing.”

Coady noted the amazement visiting skaters demonstrated upon arriving at the facility.

“A highlight for myself and many of us was watching them walk in with their parents and stop, look around and with a gasp say…WOW! and Mariposa kept the wow going, not just with Pictou County hospitality but also with its impressive skating results.”

A trio of Mariposa skaters completed the schedule with silver medals in open team competition: Georgia Murray, Nina Davey and Chloe Hebb.

Hebb won a Star 7 short program gold and added a bronze medal in her Star 8 long program. Davey received a Star 8 silver medal and Murray added a Star 9 bronze medal.

Among other medalists, Brooke Pennington earned gold medals in three elements: her Star 9 short program, Star 10 long program and in open elements.
