Starbucks making Pictou County debut this fall

Something big is brewing for coffee lovers to look forward to this year. Starbucks Coffee is coming to Pictou County this fall with a new location opening in New Glasgow on East Rover Road attached to Subway.

“The building plans are just getting underway,” said Greg Burrows, owner and operator of the Subway Franchises, who is opening Starbucks. The coffee shop will be added on to the current Subway restaurant building. Burrows added that the brand itself is certainly exciting and he is excited to take this new opportunity to Pictou County.

“Starbucks has always been sort of a big city thing,” he said, although he is hopeful that the county will embrace it as well. So far he said that all the major hurdles for opening the business have been cleared and preliminary designs and plans are being drawn up. By mid-summer, it is hoped that construction on the building will begin.

“There’s enough chatter, enough excitement about this area,” said Burrows on how viable the business will be. “I think it’s a calculated risk.”

A call to Starbucks Coffee for comment on the new store was not returned as of press time.

A new coffee shop isn’t the only thing Burrows has in the works though. He is currently in the process of having his offer accepted for the former KFC building, now Matt Gunning’s auto Sales in Pictou. Once finalized Burrows is looking forward to moving his well established Subway franchise in Pictou to the free-standing building across the road from its current home. A drive through option will also be added to that restaurant once moved into its own building.

With the two big projects on his plate, Burrows added that he will likely put a focus on the Subway project to finish it first while still working away at Starbucks as well.
