TRENTON — The two Daves have become fixtures among those who take part in the annual Joe Earle Memorial Road Races in Trenton.
While Dave Hood and Dave MacLennan have other commitments, they do end up running in the one-mile or five-mile distances that will once again be contested in various divisions on Victoria Day during the 54th edition of the popular event.
MacLennan, 54, has been training for marathons in Nova Scotia that include the Blue Nose marathon this Sunday in Halifax before the races in Trenton.
Hood, 44, was looking for a good qualifying time for next year’s Boston Marathon after finishing the 2018 edition of the world-famous race on April 16 in three hours, 13 minutes, 57 seconds. His first choice this spring was the Fredericton Marathon if he could recover in time from running in Boston.
“It was a wonderful experience,” Hood said, regarding the Boston event. “The weather wasn’t that great, and it was tough to figure what to wear and how to run. Things were going according to plan but eventually the legs started to tighten up. The last four miles, I was just trying to survive.”
Special events in Trenton include the Courtney Malcolm Award presented to a school in Pictou County which has participants in the races who place first, second or third.
It’s also Peter Corbin Day in honour of the young runner who has excelled at events locally and beyond.
