If puppy dog eyes melt your heart then it will be impossible to resist the SPCA Pictou County annual golf tournament, now named the Kathy Skoke-Fortin Memorial golf tournament.

The tournament has been running for a number of years as a fundraiser for the local animal shelter to help it maintain conditions and care for the animals it looks after.

“It goes toward any animal care and anything like that,” said Margaret Harris, one of the workers at the SPCA.

Vince Angst has been organizing the event since it began seven years ago and is looking forward to another year of fun and fundraising for the organization. It was Angst who suggested renaming the tournament after local animal lover Skoke-Fortin, who passed away from cancer in 2016.

“She was an animal lover and took in strays, so we thought it was very appropriate to name it after her,” Angst explained.

Over the past six years, the event has managed to raise $20,000 for the shelter and organizers are hoping to surpass last year’s total of $7,500 at this year’s event. Although the golfing aspect of the day is the big draw and full of fun, the biggest fundraiser of the day is the silent auction. Prizes from the auction are donated by sponsors and auctioned off with all the proceeds going toward the Pictou County SPCA.

Deadline to register for the tournament is August 20; call Angst at 902-754-2433, 902-396-3595 or email wvangst@hotmail.com. The tournament takes place at Glen Lovat Golf Course on August 26 beginning at 1 p.m. at a cost of $360 per team of four or $90 per person. It is shotgun start and best ball format on 18 holes with cart included; the event will finish off with a steak barbecue and silent auction.
