Affleck places Eagles Chance for sale

MOUNT WILLIAM — Eagles Chance is for sale.

Owner Brian Affleck said the poor financial performance of the par 3 golf course and driving range this year has forced him to put the property up for sale.

“Our current loan structure is not working,” he said. “It’s my fifth year here and we had steady growth over the first four years, but Mother Nature intervened and we have no capital to pay the bills. I have to think about what’s best for the family because for about seven and half months they hardly see me unless they’re out here with me.”

Affleck said his golf academy has been successful financially and in terms of registration. Some of the younger golfers have done well at provincial and regional golf events.

He recalled how longtime former owners Terry and Linda White had the property for sale for several years before Affleck was able to purchase it.

It’s conceivable that the Brian Affleck Golf Academy could operate at Eagles Chance under different ownership, Affleck said.

“The golf academy will continue,” he said. “It could be still here … there is no time line for the sale. I have no idea what the future holds. We’re looking at all options.”

Affleck said Eagles Chance has operated under a community-based loan regime. He said a bank loan would have meant he could have amortized a loan over a longer period, but banks generally don’t finance seasonal operations like his.

Affleck’s golf season was jolted earlier this summer by his decision to close the critter petting farm he opened last summer. Weather had a bearing on his decision to sell all the livestock after six groups booked in June cancelled due to rain and seven groups committed for July cancelled due to the hot weather.

At the time, he said those setbacks negated the cash flow he had anticipated for the business.

Affleck is at Eagles Chance most of the time while it’s open but tries to find time to keep his own competitive professional golf game sharp.

He set a course record this summer by carding a 10-under-par 62 on the first day while winning the Stanhope Open professional golf tournament.

Affleck is competing in the Parrsboro Open on Saturday and Sunday.
