PICTOU — The Pictou Academy Pitbulls helped themselves get ready for the Northumberland Region baseball playoffs by hosting Northumberland Nighthawks at the CN Diamond.

The Pitbulls are scheduled to play two games on Friday and two on Saturday during the regional tournament in Amherst.

Pictou, a Division II team, dropped a 19-2 decision against the Division I Nighthawks in the Pitbulls’ first game of the season.

“We’re a very young team,” said coach Doug Reid, who noted the Pitbulls have just one Grade 12 player on their roster compared to five last year.

Winning pitcher Luke Young allowed one earned run and struck out four.

Jordan Tran led the Nighthawks’ offence by going 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and two runs scored.

Pictou starter Steve Brennan took the loss, while fanning five through four innings. Just five of the 14 runs he allowed were earned.

Ethan Smith scored one of Pictou’s runs after a walk and two stolen bases.
