“As a region we have been celebrating the best of Canada’s East Coast along with Saltscapes for more than 20 years.  Under the Direction of Jim and Linda Gourlay, Saltscapes has branded Eastern Canada through compelling content, story-telling, creative collaboration and signature events. Through their content and their consumer shows, they have compelled a generation to eat, drink, shop and vacation locally,” says Sean Murray, CEO of Metro Guide Publishing and the Advocate Group of Companies.

A deal announced today will combine two of the region’s largest Magazine Publishing and content companies to create one diversified, information, media and events company. The Saltscapes team will join Advocate’s Metro Guide Publishing team without any anticipated job reductions.

Today’s media landscape is complex, the strengths of these two prominent media and communication companies will create an organization that is well positioned for diverse market engagement and future success.  With the addition of Saltscapes, Metro Guide and Advocate will boast industry leading expertise in lifestyle, tourism, homes, arts and culture, entertainment, transportation, health, contract publishing, e-publishing, community journalism and events.  The near term focus will be on sharing combined strengths with a focus on growth.

“Jim and Linda Gourlay have set themselves apart as national industry leaders and innovators.  We are thrilled that they are joining the Advocate Family. Our collective focus will be on how to leverage our full portfolio of products, services, events and publications to capture, honour and  promote our east coast community, culture and economy.  We are looking forward to further engaging Canadians through content excellence,”  says Murray.

With Saltscapes “Celebrating Canada’s East Coast Together” and Advocate  “Enhancing our Economy and Communities Through Better Communication”  the companies’ progressive philosophies and culture are a perfect fit for future success.

In a joint statement, the Gourlays said:  “Saltscapes continues to be a journey of passion. We are a multi-platform, multi-award-winning brand that continues to delight and engage high demographic consumers all across the region and beyond. Today we are strengthened.

We are humble, homegrown small business folks. All Saltscapes properties are established Atlantic Canadian brand entities with a responsible, environmentally conscious, social kindness and grassroots business culture. Our core values have remained the same for 19 years—excellent quality standards in publishing and events, a passionate, fiercely proud team and traditional values of strong business integrity exceeding consumer and client expectations at every turn.

That won’t change.”
