NEW GLASGOW – The Pictou County Senior Rugby Club’s Division II side is poised to host a Maritime championship game this weekend.

The game is scheduled for the Parkdale Sport Complex on Saturday at a time to be announced. The starting time of 2 p.m. has been confirmed.

Club spokesman Dave Delorey said that the game will be for a Division III championship instead of Division II.

Pictou County advanced to host the game after defeating the host Eastern Passage side 31-12 on September 29.

“The game was played on a smaller field which went to there favour – they are a bigger squad.” He said. “Our quick backs had to work harder on the smaller field to create and find the holes. We went head to head with them in defence holding them to 12 points.”

Pictou County took a 7-0 lead on a converted try, but Eastern Shore took the lead by scoring the next 12 points on two tries, one converted.

More heroics followed for Pictou County, who scored the next 24 points and wore down their opponents.

“The boys simply keep coming with no let up and Eastern Passage was not able to keep up the pace,” Delorey said.

Justin MacLennan scored two tries and added three converts for 16 points.

Matt Chediac also scored two tries, while Reed MacDonald got the other try.
