Selects win three divisions in Subway Cup female hockey

The Northern Subway Selects completed the 2018 Subway Cup on Sunday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre with a 5-0 victory over the Northern Lightning to win the Midget AAA Division in the sixth annual female hockey tournament.

KJ Emery scored twice, while Ashley Livingston, Natalie MacKay and Cassie Clarke got the other goals.

The Selects did not take the easy way to the division final. They overwhelmed the Central Storm 5-1 on Friday in Pictou, taking the first 25 shots of the game through two periods while outshooting them 15-9 in the third period for a 40-9 margin.

Cape Breton upset the Selects 4-1 later on Friday at the Wellness Centre, but the Selects recovered by shutting out EDZA West on Saturday to reach the semifinals.

There, Emery scored twice in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie as the Selects defeated Cape Breton 4-2. Eva Wornell and MacKay also scored.

The Selects also won the Midget AA and Peewee AA divisions, while the Bantam AA Selects also reached the final.

The event featured 31 teams from throughout the Maritimes in Atom AA, Pee Wee AA, Bantam AA, Midget AA and Midget AAA divisions.

BANTAM AA

The Western Phantoms of New Brunswick edged the Pictou County Subway Selects 1-0 in the Bantam AA final.

Erin MacNeil, Jaylen Langille, Olivia Fitt and Bree MacPherson scored as the Selects advanced to the final with a 4-1 semifinal victory over Metro West Blue. Megan Smith and Willa Evans provided assists, while the winning goaltender was Gabby Arsenault.

The Selects had a perfect 4-0 record in round robin play.

Arsenault collected a shutout and got goals from Baillie Griffon and Julia MacDonald to top Western Wind from P.E.I. 2-0. Emily Hart and Kenzie Greencorn added assists.

Fittt scored both goals and Arsenault provided another shutout in the Selects’ 2-0 victory against Central Storm,P.E.I.

Fitt tipped in a Sarah Fraser point shot as the Selects edged Newbridge Academy 1-0. Arsenault secured the shutout in that games and in the Selects’ 1-0 victory over the Cape Breton Blizzard 1-0.

Langille scored the only goal with help from Fitt and Josie Dunn.

ATOM AA

The Fundy Highland Atom AA Subway Selects posted an 0-2-2 record in their four preliminary games and did not advance to the playoffs.

Kenli Ross was phenomenal in nets for all four games facing an average of 30 shots a game which, in a couple of the games, was up to five times that of her opposing netminder.

Ashtyn MacHattie scored both goals for the Selects in a 2-2 tie with Valley Wild.

The Selects’ second game was a 3-2 loss to Metro West Blue, with Mollie Cleary scoring assisted by Sophie Hatchard and Ashtyn MacHattie scoring unassisted

Rogan Vint scored, assisted by Delaney Dean and Addison Smith, in a 1-1 tie against the Metro East Inferno.

MacHattie scored with an assist by Ada White in a 2-1 loss to Metro Force Red.

PEEWEE A

This weekend the Peewee A Subway Selects girls hockey team took to the ice for a double header against Cape Breton West. They took two hard losses but tried to keep their heads up and stayed focused during their games. The first game the Selects scored one goal by Avery Henderson and assisted by Carmen Langille. The second game also had one lone goal coming from Acelyn Potter assisted by Brooke Greene.
