The Pictou County Wear Well Bombers will host the 2018-19 Hockey Nova Scotia Major Bantam championship tournament.
Head coach Jon Sim confirmed the tournament will be played the weekend of March 16 and 17 at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
“It’s a great opportunity for the Wear Well Bombers, the community and the Wellness Centre,” he said. “It’s going to be spectacular.”
Sim said the team learned it would be hosting the event about two weeks ago, but the Bombers appear to be enjoying some momentum from it.
The Bombers upset the first-place Gulls from St. Margaret’s Bay 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday at home and added a 1-0 victory on Sunday over the host Dartmouth Whalers.
Kiefer Avery’s two power-play goals gave the Bombers a 4-3 lead in the third period, but the Gulls forced overtime with 41 seconds left in the frame.
Lucas Canning scored the Bombers’ other two goals.
Thomas Gariepy was outstanding in goal for the bombers, who were outshot 43-23.
Canning’s shorthanded goal backed Gariepy’s shutout goaltending on Sunday.
Canning leads the league with 17 goals and is third in points with 23.
Avery and Landon Sim have 22 points each.
