YMCA Peace Week wrapped up in Pictou County on Saturday morning with a community walk from the New Glasgow Farmers’ Market along the Samson Trail.
The week’s events were designed to connect people, the Y’s acting executive director Heidi Sinclair said.
“Just providing opportunities to bring people together, to chat and to be physically active, is important,” said Sinclair.
YMCA Peace Week is intended to celebrate peace and the peace-building work happening throughout the community.
It began with an awards breakfast on Nov. 19 that celebrated peacemakers in the community. They were presented to an individual: Henry Green; youth: Beth McNeill; and group: Safe Harbour. Tareq Hadhad of Peace by Chocolate was the guest speaker.
Other activities included a hike, meditation, and laughter yoga, all free and “intended for everyone to be involved,” Sinclair said.
Sinclair said they had lots of people out for the activities, particularly the breakfast with 245 participants.
“It is a good way to recognize really fantastic work that’s happening in our community inside and outside our YMCA and all the things that we do together to build a healthy Pictou County.”
