A big band with a big sound is making its way to the deCoste Performing Arts Centre to help out some local schools this month.
The Stadacona Band will be playing tunes of all types in support of the band programs for McCulloch Education Centre, Dr. W.A. MacLeod Consolidated School and West Pictou Consolidated School.
“For anyone that thinks it’s just a military band…they play a complete variety,” said David Pos, who helps with the band programs and set up the show.
Pos said he had heard that the band was available to play concerts in support of different organizations and figured it would be the perfect opportunity to raise money for new instruments.
As the band of the Royal Canadian Navy, they make their way around the globe playing for all kinds of audiences. Pos added that together it is essentially nine different bands playing that can all play different styles of music, allowing its repertoire to range from pop music, Dixieland jazz to marching band music.
The musicians in the Stadacona Band are among the best in Canada, and must be, to achieve a placement in this internationally known ensemble. They travel the world visiting many countries every year. Many band members are also freelance musicians and work with other musicians throughout Nova Scotia and beyond.
“All three programs have needs in all areas,” said Pos about the fundraiser and the band programs. He is hoping that the funds raised will be able to be used to buy instruments — possibly some of the bigger ones to ensure everyone will have something to play.
The programs are also taking instrument donations, which has helped them acquire enough instruments for students in the past. The donation call goes out to anyone that might have old band instruments in their house that are no longer in use.
“That’s been really, really helpful,” said Pos about the donation program.
The Stadacona Band will be appearing at the deCoste on Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online or in person at the deCoste Centre box office.
