Major Midgets try to exit cellar

The Pictou County Weeks Major Midgets are positioned to escape last place in the Nova Major Midget Hockey League if they can achieve some success over the next week.

Pictou County will host the Cape Breton Tradesmen in their next home game starting at noon on Sunday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

Before came a match scheduled for Tuesday in Port Hood against the Cape Breton West Islanders, who jolted Pictou County’s chances by posting a 4-1 victory.

Jacob Melanson scored is 19th goal of the season late in the third period after the Islanders had already taken a 4-0 lead.

The Islanders outshot Pictou County 53-27, including 22-9 in the first period.

Pictou County entered this week’s games two points behind both the Tradesmen and the South Shore Mustangs in the league standings by picking up a point after a 4-3 shootout loss to the Valley Wildcats last Saturday at the Wellness Centre.

Sam Archibald opened the scoring for Pictou County with eight seconds left in the first period, but Pictou County needed Jacob Melanson’s goal with 48 seconds left in the third period to force extra time.

Blake Kontuk also scored in the third period for Pictou County.

Each team took 27 shots in regulation, while Pictou County outshot the Valley 4-2 in overtime.

Melanson entered this week in third place in the players’ point standings with 18 goals and 20 assists for 38 points.
