James Mullinger immediately asked to return to Glasgow Square after his well-received show last year and he will do so on Feb. 8 at 8 p.m.
The second stop on his “Almost Canadian Tour,” Mullinger is not only a comedian but also a father, editor, cover model in England and inspiration for the full length movie The Comedian’s Guide to Survival.
Moving to Saint John, N.B., from Berkshire, England to provide his children, River and Hunter, a better life, Mullinger is proving that it is the people who make a life enjoyable, and hilarious.
Being told New Brunswick does not like comedy, he has proven otherwise by selling out shows, the biggest of which was for 5,000 spectators in Harbour Station and throughout the Maritimes. With a resume as long as he is tall, his primary goal now is to sustain what he is doing by providing for his family by making people laugh.
Over the last 15 years, Mullinger has visited New Glasgow several times yet has not yet enjoyed our famous pizza. His mission this week is to taste Pictou County pizza as well as a donair he has heard so much about.
Studying for his Canadian citizenship, this comedian strives to be recognized as a New Brunswicker instead of that guy from England. Meeting a lot of the Maritime community for material for his magazine, Maritime Edit, Mullinger is a true ambassador of Saint John and the Maritimes as a whole.
Seeing Mullinger on stage it may be easier to see that he was not an athletic child than it is to understand he was not very sociable or academic in his school years. With energy to spare, and a positive mindset that helps ensure he arrives to every show despite the weather, he states proudly: “If something doesn’t exist and you want it to, create it.”
Since moving to Eastern Canada, ‘create’ is what he has done. Most prominent of all, Mullinger has created a buzz of positivity within everyone he meets. In the CBC special City on Fire, viewers hear Nikki Payne say, “You have ignited an excitement in me I haven’t had in years.”
