Fraser drops bronze medal in boxing

RED DEER, Alta. – Matt Fraser is coming home without a Canada Winter Games medal.

Fraser, a resident of Antigonish and a member of the Albion Amateur Boxing Cub in Trenton, fought in the 56-kg bronze medal bout on Wednesday but lost a unanimous decision to Jawad Miakhail of Manitoba.

Fraser defeated Carter Butler of Newfoundland and Labrador on Tuesday to advance to the bronze medal match.. He defeated Butler in his first bout before losing to an Alberta opponent, Cole Brander, in his second bout.

In male hockey, Nova Scotia lost 7-5 to Manitoba to settle for sixth place.

Jacob Melanson, a resident of Amherst and a member of the Weeks Major Midgets, collected a goal and an assist in the game.

Nova Scotia defeated B.C. 3-2 in overtime in the relegation round to advance against Manitoba. Nova Scotia lost 6-3 to Saskatchewan in its quarterfinal match after finishing the preliminary round with a 1-2 record.

Nova Scotia lost 5-0 to Ontario on Saturday and 10-2 to Quebec on Sunday before defeating New Brunswick 4-2 on Monday.

Melanson scored a goal against New Brunswick and scored a goal against Saskatchewan.

Three members of the New Glasgow-based Mariposa East Figure Skating Club are competing for Nova Scotia next week: Brooke Pennington, Cameron Boulter and Jailyn Elliott.
