NEW GLASGOW – The North Nova Gryphons have secured one Highland Region high school rugby championship.

They are trying for another one today when the Gryphon boys visit the top-seed Northumberland Nighthawks in a battle for the regional boys’ banner.

The game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. at the NRHS field.

The Nighthawks earned top seed in the regional league by going undefeated in the abbreviated spring rugby season. Their wins included a narrow 10-5 victory over the Gryphons in their only meeting.

North Nova defeated the Cobequid Cougars on Tuesday in New Glasgow to move on to face the Nighthawks.

Meanwhile, North Nova’s girls qualified for the provincial championship by defeating their counterparts from Cobequid on Tuesday in New Glasgow.

The provincial championships are being played next week in Windsor.
