The Town of Pictou has issued a water conservation order to address current shortages within the town’s water distribution system. The order gives the town the ability to ensure conservation measures are observed and enforced where necessary.
A press release issued by the town indicates that within the past few days, the town’s Public Works employees and contractors have identified and repaired a number of leaks.
“This morning it appears a new leak has materialized as we continue to lose a significant amount of water. Users will be experiencing lower than usual pressure and volume despite the Town Water Utility producing 300 litres of water per hour more than at the same time last year.”
Town officials continue to work with the fire department to ensure appropriate protection is in place during this shortage.
The town is also working hard to locate the source or sources of leaks in order to ensure necessary water services in the short term and a reliable water supply for the long term. Should anyone notice an unusual accumulation of water they are asked to notify the town office at 902-485-4372.
Residents and Water Utility customers are asked for their cooperation, until further notice, by only using water when necessary. Water wastage will not be permitted to ensure sufficient water is available for emergency services. Those found watering lawns/flowers, washing cars, filling swimming pools or any other activity deemed to be non-essential will have their water service suspended. Larger commercial consumers will be notified directly of the order.
Updates regarding the situation can be found on the Town of Pictou website (www.townofpictou.ca).
