PICTOU — Organizers of the downtown event called Downtown Pictou Spring Fling are preparing for the Downtown Pictou Fall Fest later this month.

Downtown business operators Kevin Pettipas, as well as Sonya Park and her daughter Rhonda Park are once again leading the planning for the festival that will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 14.

“We’re trying to bring the town together,” Rhonda Park said. “We’re trying get more things for people to do.”

She said she enjoyed being part of the spring event and appreciates how more people are interested in helping out with the fall event.

“I loved it,” she said. “We were so busy that I didn’t realize how tired I was.”

Pettipas agreed that organizing the spring fling was a worthwhile experience.

“The spring fling went so well,” he said. “We’re trying to re-invent Pictou.”

Water Street will be closed to vehicle traffic during the day for events that include a flea market, hay rides, sidewalk sales, local entertainment, 4-H animals, a corn roast and barbecue.

A highlight will be a scarecrow display and contest that encourages everyone to enter scarecrows for judging that will proceed throughout the day. The first prize will be a gift basket donated by participating Pictou businesses.

Proceeds from the festival will go into the Purchase a Train for Pictou Fund, the group has set up. It will be similar to the Tatamagouche Road Train that was brought in for tours in town at the spring fling.

“It will be based on a Pictou theme,” Pettipas said.

Pettipas can be reached by email at safe.t.nuts@gmail.com, while the Parks can be reached at Water Street Market and Bakery by phone by 902-485-8454 for more general information, as well as entering scarecrows or booking a flea market table.
