African-American teen sweethearts Fonny and Tish are ripped apart when Fonny is wrongly arrested for the rape of a Puerto Rican woman because of the machinations of a racist cop. While seeking justice for Fonny, a pregnant Tish relies on her Harlem community, including her sister, mother and future mother-in-law. Based on the famed 1974 novel of the same name by James Baldwin, the screenplay was written by Baldwin and director Barry Jenkins of last year’s hit, Moonlight. The film picked up many awards, including an Oscar for Regina King for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.
