Murray, Hines, Els, Brown earn awards


PORT HAWKESBURY – A number of Pictou County’s dancers travelled on May 28 to the Port Hawkesbury Highland Dance Association’s 42nd annual competition.

Annika Murray, Emma Hines, Alyssa Els and Penelope Brown were among those who earned honours.

Judges for the event were Erin Mansfield and Natalie Quick, both of Ontario.

Beginner 8 & Under – Penelope Brown: Fling 2nd, Sword 1st, Sean Truibhas 3rd, Flora 2nd; runner-up trophy winner
Beginner 9-10 – Lauren Hiltz: Fling 4th, Sword 1st, Sean Truibhas 4th, Flora 6th
Novice 10 – Alyssa Els: Fling 1st, Sword 1st, Sean Truibhas 1st, Flora 1st.  High Aggregate trophy winner
Premier 11 – Annika Murray: Fling 1st, Sword 1st, Sean Truibhas 1st, Reel 1st. High Aggregate trophy winner
Premier 14-15 – Madison Baillie: Fling 3rd, Sword 5th, Sean Truibhas 2nd, Reel 6th.  Beth MacNeil: Fling 5th, Sean Truibhas 6th
Premier 16 & Over – Emma Hines: Fling 1st, Sword 2nd, Sean Truibhas 1st, Reel 2nd. High Aggregate trophy winner; Kiara Sutherland: Fling 6th, Sword 6th, Sean Truibhas 6th, Reel 6th.

The second annual Fling in Spring Competition took place in Summerside on May 21 and was judged by Kelti Stowkowy, Calgary.

Amelia Parker was the only local dancer present and she competed in the Premier 11 & Under class.  She placed third in the Fling, Sean Truibhas and the Reel and fourth in the Barracks.
