Young entrepreneurs give back with pop-up prom dress shop

For anyone who has ever experienced heart palpitations  at the idea of buying a prom dress, a soon-to-be-opened, catch-it-while-you-can pop-up shop may be for you.

Operated by sisters Ally and Abby MacKenize, the Pictou County Pop Up Prom Shop will be open November 11 and 12 at 200 Provost Street on the premises of Abby’s business, Trap Door Escape. New dresses will be available from 70-90 per cent off normal retail prices. Gently used consignment options will be available as well.

“We got a whole lot of dresses at a liquidation sale,” Ally explained, “so we thought it would be a good idea to offer Pictou County residents some really nice prom dresses at an inexpensive cost.”

Prices for new dresses will range from $50 to $150 dollars and the shop has options available from sizes 4 to 14.

“We’ve heard from quite a lot of people already so far,” Ally said, “both interested in coming on the day and selling dresses.”

Persons looking to sell a dress through consignment will be charged a fee which will be going towards Pictou County Roots for Youth.

“Because the dresses are geared towards young people I think that that’s a good charity because it’s also for young people,” Abby said of the charitable angle.

Abby, who is currently a Grade 11 student at Northumberland Regional High School, said she is not going to prom this year, however she does “have a favourite of the ones we bought.”

Abby said a lot of her friends are planning to hit the pop up but reports that no one has yet attempted to butter her up for a better deal.

For Ally, currently a student at Dalhousie University, the Prom Shop is something she wished existed when she was preparing for prom.

“I had to get mine online,” she said, “because I didn’t find there were a lot of places here that had a wide variety of prom dresses.”

Ally said her prom dress set her back $150, but many of her friends paid upwards of $800.

More information can be found at the Pictou County Pop Up Prom Shop’s Facebook or by emailing pcpopuppromshop@gmail.com.
