Major Midgets stay alive


COLE HARBOUR – The Pictou County Weeks Major Midgets will try and prolong their Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League playoff series when they visit the Cole Harbour Pro Hockey Life Wolfpack today in the fifth game of their series.

The Major Midgets staved off elimination by splitting their weekend home games in the series. They fell behind three games to none on Saturday with a 7-5 loss but rallied for a 6-5 victory on Sunday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

“We didn’t roll over and die,” head coach Kyle MacLennan said of Sunday’s game. “I think we recognized that we had to come out and play with a lot of desperation.”

The Major Midgets got three straight goals from Gavin Hart, Gerald Blackmore and Kevin Mason and outshot the Wolfpack 19-5 in the second period to take a 5-3 lead, but Jaden Mason’s goal in the third period proved to be the difference.

The Major Midgets started well in the third period and survived a concerted attack by the Wolfpack later in the period.

Blackmore and Carson Lanceleve gave the Major Midgets an early 2-0 lead in the first period before the Wolfpack roared back to take a 3-2 lead.

Total shots on goal were 46-32 in favour of the Major Midgets.

Lanceleve gave the Major Midgets an early 1-0 lead in the first period on Saturday , but the Wolfpack led 2-1 after the period. They led 4-1 after the second period and took a 5-1 lead early in the third period before the Major Midgets rallied on two goals by Bryce Reynolds and one each by Blackmore and Evan Pettipas.

The Colts iced the game with 33 seconds left.

Today’s game will start at 7:15 p.m.
