With about 17 teenagers on their team, Jeana’s Girls raised nearly half the overall total for Pictou County Relay for Life this year. The team also had the two top individual fundraisers for the event — Nina Davey and Georgia Murray.
Over the course of a few months, the team managed to fundraise a total of $26,111 to hold their title from last year as the top fundraising team. The girls held a yard sale, barbecue, sold scarves, held a teen dance, bingo, a bake sale and held a toilet fundraiser where participants had a pink toilet placed on their lawn and would have to pay to have it taken off or moved to someone else’s home.
Murray, although helping with all the fundraisers, took a different approach to her personal fundraising by requesting donations for her birthday; from this she collected $600.
“I already have a lot of stuff at home,” said the teenager.
As a team, the girls took being the top fundraisers very seriously to honour the spirit of their friend, Jeana English, for whom the team was formed.
“We just wanted to be on top because we know Jeana would want us to,” Davey said. “She was good at everything she did so we wanted to make her proud.”
“She was really competitive,” added Murray. “As we saw our totals go up we were getting really excited about being first in our region, then in Nova Scotia, then Atlantic Canada.”
Although the Relay website does not show the totals for these areas altogether, the girls would check other Relay totals and compare theirs. Other than for the memory of Jeana, the girls feel it is important to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society.
“I think the Canadian Cancer Society is just a really good society to fundraise for,” said Murray.
“There are so many people in our lives that are affected by cancer that it’s a good way to give back,” Davey said.
The girls added to keep an eye out for the pink toilet and other fundraisers next year and extended a big thank you to all those who supported them.
