STELLARTON — A balanced roster in terms of age and talent is hosting the Soccer Nova Scotia Senior B women’s championship this weekend in Stellarton.
The Northern Nova United Falcons are hosting seven other teams in two pools during the championship on Saturday and Sunday at the William F. Sobey soccer complex.
The Falcons will test the Valley Rebels at noon and Metro II at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Chester at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday.
The first-place team in each pool will contest the championship.
“Our current record is 12-1 with 35 goals for and nine against,” player-coach Jackie Fitt-Ryan said. “We won the provincial title back in 2015 and we have a very good shot again. We won a bronze medal at the Gunn Baldursson tournament this year, where we suffered our only loss this season in the semifinals.”
The roster ranges in age between 18 and 40. Soccer Nova Scotia added an Under-21 division but NNU does not have a team in that age group so those players who have advance from U-18 form part of the Falcons’ roster.
“We have a very strong team made up of experienced players and some very talented young players,” Ryan said. “About half of the team has been together for 10 years.”
Among the Falcons’ players, Sian Rankin leads the team with seven goals this season, while Shanice Maxwell has scored five goals, Melanie Hill has four, Kara Power three and Rachel Graham and Jenna Fraser two each.
Alexandra Kampa-Plouffe and Christina Berthiaume have one goal each.
The other members of the team include Melinda Thompson, Veronica Deno, Amanda Hill, Katelyn Dunn, Shauna Poirier, T-Anna Fraser, Katelyn Lewis, Kaleigh Langille, Rachael Mattinson and Kayla Lafromboise.
