WESTVILLE — The Hants East Tigers have captured the 2018 Danny Dorrington Memorial High School Hockey Tournament.
The Tigers earned the 11th annual tournament honours on Sunday by defeating the Dartmouth Spartans 4-1. The Tigers snapped a 1-1 tie with three goals with less than three minutes left in the third period.
Both local teams made it to the semifinals before being eliminated.
Dartmouth edged the host Northumberland Nighthawks 3-2 in one semifinal, while the Tigers topped the North Nova Gryphons 3-1.
Josh Fraser and Connor Boudreau scored the Nighthawks’ goals, while Zach Houston tallied for North Nova.
The Tigers nipped Dartmouth 2-1 on Friday to open the tournament. They rolled to Sunday’s final after defeating Strait Area Education and Recreational Centre (SAERC) of Port Hawkesbury by a 7-2 score and levelling Dalbrae 9-1.
The Spartans downed Dalbrae 5-1 and outscored North Nova 3-1 in their other games. Matt Chediac had NNEC’s lone goal.
The Nighthawks were unbeaten until their semifinal loss. Their record included a 3-3 tie against the Gryphons.
Mike MacGillivray scored twice and Liam Fraser once for the Nighthawks. Chediac, Connor Dewar and Houston replied for North Nova.
MacGillivray scored twice in the Nighthawks’ 4-2 victory over Dalbrae. Ben MacDonald and Justin MacLennan got the other goals.
MacGillivray and Liam Fraser scored twice and MacDonald got the other goal in the Nighthawks’ victory over SAERC.
Chediac scored twice in North Nova’s 8-3 win over SAERC. Spencer Murray, Ben Turnbull, Hayden Butler, Evan Reynolds, John MacGee and Braydon Killen also scored.
