PICTOU – Fourteen teams, including the host Pictou Maripacs, began playing on Friday in the Atom C minor hockey tournament.
The tournament is in memory of Adam Larade and Teresa Gallant.
Play began on Friday morning with the first game featuring the New Glasgow Bombers and the Trenton Steelers.
The Pictou Maripacs followed with a game against the Bedford Jets.
The Thorburn Golden Hawks and the Westville Miners are the other local teams competing.
Action will continue through Saturday and Sunday, with the championship game at 11 a.m. That game will feature the winners of semifinal games involving the first-place and fourth-place teams at 8 a.m. and the second-place and third-place teams at 9 a.m.
This is the 26th anniversary of the untimely death of Adam Larade in a motor vehicle crash in 1992. It is also the 23rd year that the hockey tournament is being played in his memory.
Teresa Gallant was a town councillor in Pictou for nine years. She was president of both Pictou Minor Hockey and Pictou Ringette, served on the Hector Arena Commission and the Pictou School Bowlers. She also started an organization called Friends to Pictou Youth.
The tournament featuring teams in the bantam and midget divisions followed her untimely death from brain cancer and was first played in 1999.
