Mother, son, pets perish in Westville fire

A man and his mother, along with three family pets, perished in a house fire in Westville in the wee hours of Canada Day.

On Sunday, July 1st at approximately 12:20 a.m. Westville Fire Department responded to a structure fire on South Main Street. Westville Fire Department was assisted by Stellarton and Alma Fire departments and had approximately 34 fire fighters on the ground. Fire fighters were on the scene until after 3 a.m. Westville Police were called to the scene around 1 a.m.

It was discovered that two occupants of the home – 84 year old Pennual Louise Duggan and her 56-year old son Carl Allan Crawford – perished along with three family pets.

Westville Police were assisted by the RCMP Forensic Investigation Service as well as the RCMP Major Crime Unit.

The Fire Marshals office also was involved in attempting to identify the cause of the fire. There has been no exact determination of the cause of the fire to date, but police do not suspect any foul play.

The investigation is continuing.
