Mobile sailing event offered this summer

PICTOU — A mobile sailing program has begun in Pictou.

The program started on July 2 with Branden O’Brien from True Potential Fitness leading an active dryland warm up.

Pictou Parks and Recreation co-ordinator Michelle Young explained that the program operates in town in partnership with the Nova Scotia Yachting Association and Sail Nova Scotia.

“It would be nice if it grew and sustained itself,” she said. “There is a strong interest. We’ve had waiting lists before for the program.”

Carson Murray is the instructor and will be travelling the province this summer teaching sailing.

Murray has a trailer with six small sailing vessels used in training six youngsters ages eight to 14 for which the program is available.

Sailing instruction and practice took place last week and is also scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 30 through August 3.

“It’s going great,” Young said. “The kids are excited. It’s a great program.”
