MELMERBY – Hundreds of adults and children will take part this weekend in an array of triathlon events at Melmerby Beach.
The kids triathlon on Saturday is free and the events are untimed. Registration is at 8 a.m. and races start at 9 a.m.
Events are for kids of any age in a distance they are comfortable with.
There were 50 kids and 80 adults at a recent event that introduced triathlon swim, bike and run events to those who may be unfamiliar with triathlons.
“Our Tri club and YMCA “families” welcomed many newcomers to the sport of triathlon, with participants from ages three to 73,” said organizing committee member Kathy Saulnier. “It all happened in an atmosphere of fun and friendship.”
The adult triathlons are taking place on Sunday.
The transition station is open at 6 a.m. for participants to rack their bikes, while registration is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Racing starts at 8:30 a.m., beginning with the sprint that consists of a 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike route and 5-K run.
The Olympic event starts at 8:45 a.m. and consists of a 1.5-K swim, 40-K bike ride and 10-K run.
The try-a-tri starts at 9 a.m. and has a 200-metre swim, 10-K bike ride and 2-K run.
The Super Sprint starts at the same time and has the same distances.
