WESTVILLE — Two members of the Westville Boxing Club felt like winners after attending an outdoor amateur boxing card in Hants County.
Kaleb Gordon and Evan Montgomery boxed together in an exhibition bout that was part of the undercard for an event called Battle by the Bay that featured Canadian national team boxers against members of Puerto Rico boxing team.
Westville club head coach Aaron Kinch accompanied the boxers and was in Montgomery’s corner for the bout.
“It was awesome,” he said. “Evan looked better than I’ve ever seen him. Kaleb looked awesome, giving up 15 pounds and four or five inches in height.”
Gordon, 13, has won his two bouts in the 105-pound weight class.
Montgomery, 15, lost his only bout so far while boxing at the 125-pound weight limit.
“It was a competitive bout against a much more experienced boxer,” Kinch said.
Kinch said having Montgomery and Gordon attend a card featuring international talent is good exposure for them, plus they got to box outdoors.
“It was their first time and you don’t get many chances to box outside,” Kinch said. “There was no need to warm up. I was really impressed with the card.”
Kinch said he hopes Montgomery and Gordon will be matched for bouts on a card scheduled for July 28 in Moncton.
Kinch said he’s glad to be operating the club where he is in Westville. There appears to be enough room for equipment but it is a garage. That means issues with insulating the building so the boxers can train there through the winter.
