Crushers face four MHL pre-season tilts

The Pictou County Weeks Crushers will play four pre-season games in the Maritime Junior Hockey League.

The Crushers will host the Summerside Western Capitals on August 30 at the Pictou County Wellness Centre and visit the Capitals on September 1.

Their other games will be against the Truro Bearcats on September 7 in Truro and on September 8 at the Wellness Centre.

The home game against Summerside will start at 4:30 p.m. and the home game against Truro will start at 7 p.m.

The Crushers will have a diet of games with teams within their division in September.

Their first game will officially start the league’s regular season when they host the Valley Wildcats at 7 p.m. on September 13 at the Wellness Centre.

The Crushers will unveil their team captains on September 18 in conjunction with a reception and dinner that will feature as keynote speaker Brian Burke.

Burke has been the president of hockey operations for the Calgary Flames, was president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs and was the general manager of the Anaheim Ducks, the Vancouver Canucks and the Hartford Whalers.

The Crushers’ next game will be at home on September 20 against the Amherst Ramblers before the Crushers visit the South Shore Lumberjacks on Sept. 21 and the Yarmouth Mariners on September 22.

The Bearcats will visit the Crushers on September 27.

The Crushers completed a recent trade with the St. Stephen Aces by dealing Alex Saunders and a second-round pick in the 2019 entry draft for Evan Gallant and a fifth-round pick in 2019.

The deal follows transactions that include acquiring Malcolm MacEachern from the Edmundston Blizzard on July 18 for two draft choices and future considerations.

The Crushers also secured Liam MacKinnon from South Shore for conditional picks.
