Crushers test Bearcats in MHL tilts


The Pictou County Weeks Crushers will meet the Truro Bearcats in their third and fourth Maritime Junior Hockey League pre-season games.

Their games will be on Friday in Truro and on Saturday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. Both games will start at 7 p.m.

The Crushers split their first two pre-season games against the Summerside Western Capitals, winning 6-3 on Friday in Summerside and losing 7-4 on Saturday at the Wellness Centre.

The Crushers trailed the Capitals 3-2 after the first period on Saturday, but Summerside took a 6-3 lead into the third period and were helped by two power-play goals they scored during a double minor penalty assessed to the Crushers.

Ben Williams and Scott Cameron collected the Crushers’ goals in the first period, while Williams assisted on Brayden Ryan’s goal in the second period.

Evan Gallant tallied unassisted in the third for the Crushers, who outshot Summerside 28-25.

Crushers scored twice in each period to prevail in Summerside, despite being outshot 34-33.

Ryan and Cameron gave the Crushers a 2-0 lead in the first period, while Gallant and Evan MacNennan increased their lead to 4-0 in the second period.

The Capitals scored the next three goals, but Cameron and Dustin Sudds scored barely a minute apart late in the third period to ice the win.

The Crushers’ first game will officially start the league’s regular season when they host the Valley Wildcats at 7 p.m. on September 13 at the Wellness Centre. The Crushers’ next game will at home on September 20 against the Amherst Ramblers before the Crushers visit the South Shore Lumberjacks on Sept. 21 and the Yarmouth Mariners on September 22.

The Bearcats will visit the Crushers on September 27.
