Crushers drop MHL Showcase games


The Pictou County Weeks Crushers ended the 2018 MHL Showcase with a 7-4 setback against the surging Summerside Western Capitals at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

The teams were tied 4-4 before the Capitals scored three unanswered goals in the second period.

A format consisting of two 25-minute periods was used for the showcase. Results also counted in the regular-season standings.

Barrett Dachyshyn opened the scoring for the Crushers in the first period, while his second goal tied the game at 2-2. Dachyshyn added an assist and leads the Crushers’ offence after nine games with four goals and eight assists for 12 points.

The Caps, who occupy first place in the North Division, led 4-2 before goals by Evan MacLennan and Isaac Chapman once again drew the Crushers even.

Summerside outshot the Crushers 28-27.

Five other games were played on Tuesday. The Yarmouth Mariners widened their lead in the South Division as they shut out the Grand Falls Rapids 2-0, while the Edmundston Blizzard edged the South Shore Lumberjacks 5-4, the Campbellton Tigers downed the Valley Wildcats 4-2, the Truro Bearcats nipped the St. Stephen Aces 2-1 and the Miramichi Timberwolves defeated the Amherst Ramblers 5-2.

Grand Falls scored the first two goals of the game and went on to outlast the Crushers 2-1 on Monday.

Evan Gallant answered for the Crushers, who were outshot 26-24.

The Mariners defeated Edmundston 5-2, the Ramblers blanked Campbelton 3-0, Truro outscored Miramichi 3-1, the Capitals topped the South Shore 4-1 and the Aces edged the Wildcats 3-2 in Monday’s other games.

The results leave the Crushers in a tie for last place with the Wildcats in the South Division with five points each.

The Crushers have not won in their last eight games since they opened the season with a win over the Wildcats.

The Mariners, Ramblers and Bearcats have separated themselves from the other three teams in the South Division standings, while just four points separate all six teams in the North Division.
