ANTIGONISH – Another beloved holiday classic is coming to the Bauer Theatre in Antigonish.
On December 8 and 9, Theatre Antigonish is pleased to present It’s a Wonderful Life. In partnership with the Antigonish Choral Ensemble (ACE) and the St. James Handbell Choir, this production is the Lux Radio version of the Christmas classic. It reimagines the Hollywood story as a 1940s-era radio show, complete with live choral music and the beautiful sounds of the handbells.
“This well-known story about an angel looking for his wings, and a man who has worked all his life to help those around him but now finds himself in need of help, will bring the spirit of Christmas to The Bauer and to our community. We are thrilled to be working with the talented musicians of ACE and the Handbell Choir to bring this joyful celebration onto the Bauer Stage,” says artistic director Andrea Boyd.
The story will be presented in the nostalgic style of a live radio play, adapted from Lux Radio Theatre, featuring a large cast of community actors and musicians. Combined with popular music of the season, the show is sure to be a magical holiday treat, fun for the whole family. It follows the sell-out success of last year’s production of Miracle on 34th Street, and will be presented in the same format.
“The collaboration was very successful last year. We were blown away by the positive feedback and enthusiasm of the audience – both shows sold out before the actual date – so we have added a third show this year, thanks to everyone’s willingness to expand the production and add the extra time. Music makes the holidays magical, and this radio play is the perfect way to kick off the festive season. Book your tickets early, and bring the whole family!” says managing director Reema Fuller.
The shows take place December 8 at 7:30 p.m. and December 9 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 ($12 for seniors, and $10 for students). Advance tickets can be booked online at tickets.festivalantigonish.com, or by calling (902) 867-3333. Organizers expect both days to sell out so advance bookings are encouraged to avoid lineups at the door.

About the Antigonish Choral Ensemble
Antigonish Choral Ensemble is a community choir in its sixth season, and now a part of the newly formed Antigonish Choral Society. Artistic Director Ryan Billington leads ACE’s dedicated group of singers in the preparation and performance of beautiful and eclectic music in venues around Antigonish Town and County. Managed by its new Board of Directors, ACE prepares three concerts per season, sharing its performances with a wide-ranging local audience, and collaborating with other local musicians and organizations.
About the St. James Handbell Ensemble
The St. James Bell Choir has been in existence for the past ten years. During this time, a small group of our players wanted to experiment with advanced bell techniques and multiple bell ringing. From this initial experiment, they formed the St. James Handbell Ensemble. They have been performing in concerts the last several years as a duet, trio, quartet, and quintet. They will perform in It’s a Wonderful Life with ringers Chad Brazier, Elizabeth Munroe, Tara Nicholson, Bonnie Quinn and Christine Templeman. This is their third time being involved with Theatre Antigonish, having participated in the productions of Eurydice (2016) and Miracle on 34th Street (2017).
