Major Midgets sweep Islanders

The Pictou County Weeks Major Midgets will visit the Cape Breton West Islanders in their next Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League game after sweeping a pair of games from the Islanders last weekend.

Sam Archibald scored the tying and winning goals late in the third period for Pictou County in a 4-3 victory over the Islanders last Saturday in Port Hood.

Goals by Ben Fraser in the second period and Jacob Melanson in the third period for Pictou County wiped out a 2-0 lead the Islanders established in the first period.

The Islanders outshot Pictou County 33-26.

Pictou County followed with a 6-4 victory over the Isles on Sunday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. Jacob Melanson’s second goal of the game into an empty net with less than a minute left in the third period clinched Sunday’s win.

Melanson’s first goal ignited Pictou County’s four-goal second period explosion that erased the 3-0 lead that the Islanders enjoyed after the first period.

Blake Kontuk’s second goal of the game in the third period widened Pictou County’s lead to 5-3.

The Islanders had a 36-25 edge in shots over Pictou County, who took seven of nine penalties.

Pictou County remains in last place in the standings but trail the fifth-place Islanders by five points.

Melanson remains in third place in the individual scoring race with 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 points.
