PICTOU – Members of Pictou Academy’s girls’ hockey team got an extra host of high school hockey by hosting a four-team mini tournament this week at hector Arena.
Jenna Reid scored the winning goal as Pictou opened the tournament by edging the North Nova Gryphons 3-2.
Pictou outshot North Nova 16-4 in the game and overcame a 2-1 deficit on Taylor Toole’s tying goal and Reid’s winner.
Megan MacCarthy scored Pictou’s first goal.
Paige MacDonald and Rhea Young tallied for North ova.
The Gryphons’ roster was depleted for the game by the absence of players who also play Midget AAA hockey, but Pitbulls coach Jim Sloan felt they were full value for the win.
“I felt we played as well as we’re going to play,” he said.
Pictou Academy’s female hockey future is uncertain after this season, so it’s a chance to give the seven graduating members of the team a full season. It has one Grade 9 player and the rest are in Grades 10 and 11.
“We’ve had a good four-year run,” Sloan said. “We hope to have a high school team again, but we’re not sure what players will come from Grade 8.”
Pictou was scheduled to play the Hants East Tigers on Thursday and the Northumberland Nighthawks on Friday at 10 a.m.
Semifinal games on Friday will feature the first-place and fourth-place teams at 12:30 p.m. and the second-place and fourth-place teams at 2 p.m.
The winners of those games will vie for the championship in a game that is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
